Cats have long occupied a leading position in the history of human civilization; however, no society esteemed them more than the ancient Egyptians. The creatures were not just revered as gods but also loved as faithful companions, thereby shaping the course of history in a significant manner.

The Legendary Egyptian Mau

One of the most recognized cat breeds associated with Egypt is the **Egyptian Mau**. The breed is recognized by its **naturally spotted coat**, something that is not typical for domestic cats. Yet their physical beauty barely begins to describe them—these cats are **intelligent, quick, and loyal**.

In ancient Egyptian society, cats were more than pets—they were **sacred animals**. They were associated with the **goddess Bastet**, the cat-headed goddess of home, fertility, and protection.

Why Were Cats So Revered?

**Home Protectors** – Cats prevented **rodents** and **snakes** from entering houses, protecting provisions and preventing the spread of diseases.

 **Spiritual Guardians** – Ancient Egyptians believed that cats had **supernatural powers** to ward off evil spirits.

Wealthy households decorated their feline companions with **golden ornaments** and treated them with a sense of regal respect.

Killing any cat, intentionally or inadvertently, was regarded as a **grave crime** in ancient Egypt, often to be met with death. When a pet cat died, families would **shave their eyebrows** in mourning, and some even **mummified and buried their cats with them**.  

Contemporary Egyptian Cats  

Egypt remains quite abundant in its beautiful cats. These cats are mostly found on the streets of Cairo and other cities and are referred to as **Baladi** cats, looking alike the Egyptian Mau but having a somewhat **leaner build and shorter coats**, quite adept in the extreme hot climate.
